Features of Railway Axle Bearings:

Axle bearings of rolling stock are subjected to radial shock loads caused by rail joints, turnouts and sometimes wheel planes, as well as static and dynamic radial loads from the weight of the vehicle. They are also susceptible to laterally generated axle loads when trains run on curved rails or move in a serpentine motion. All these loads together form a complex combination that acts on the bearing. Therefore, the design of the axle bearing is not only based on the dimensional requirements of the axle, the geometry of the axle journal and bearing box, but also these complex load conditions. In addition, since the axle bearing plays a vital role for the safety of railway operation, it is regularly dismantled and inspected. Therefore, procedures for simple and reliable disassembly, inspection and reassembly are also important design factors. Using its extensive expertise and based on experience, Kingrail Parts designs, manufactures and supplies a wide range of axle bearings.

All types of radial roller bearings, including tapered roller bearings, spherical roller bearings and cylindrical roller bearings, have special advantages according to each type and have been used for locomotive axles.

To improve operational efficiency, bearings must provide longer inspection intervals, simplified maintenance procedures and increased integration of bearing components and adjacent components. To meet these needs, the use of advanced combined bearing seals has been introduced and widely used in modern rolling stock.

Types of axle bearings and their applications:

The axle bearings currently used are divided into the following six types according to the bearing type and sealing device:

1. RCT Bearings (Sealed Clean Rotating End Cap Tapered Roller Bearings)

2. RCC Bearings (Sealed Clean Rotating End Cap Cylindrical Roller Bearings)

3. Spherical roller bearings

4. Cylindrical roller bearing and ball bearing combination

5. Cylindrical roller bearing with ribs

6. Tapered roller bearings

To ensure adequate load-carrying capacity, all of these types are usually manufactured in a double-row configuration.
